When I was looking at colleges, I remember wondering if MIT graduates only went to work for technical companies. I later learned thats not the case at all (by looking at the list of companies that recruit on campus, or lists of alumni, for example). Certainly companies involved with biotech and computers are popular, but so are opportunities in finance, the federal government, and much more. Leading up to the Career Fair, the MIT Careers Office has a Career Week (and now, since thats been so popular, a Pre Career Week) to prepare resumes, do mock interviews, learn how to research a company, how to network, and more. Career Week also includes a variety of banquets, company information sessions, and networking opportunities. For our seniors, it will be nice for many of them to have a job lined up a month into senior year, almost a year in advance. For the underclassmen, Career Week is a great first opportunity to line up internships for the summer and for IAP. I remember Career Week being both daunting and exciting when I was a student. Much like the college admissions process, the job recruiting process was filled with thousands of options and no one clear path. But with the right advice and a bit of self-knowledge and introspection, navigating the process can be quite worthwhile. So, if you see an MIT student in a suit today, you know whats going on. How to Guess Better on the ACT

Good morning/afternoon/evening Magoosh readers. With spring ACT season wrapped up and summer ACT season quickly approaching, there are a lot of students out there hoping to improve their ACT scores. In this article we’ll be talking about one of the least appreciated, but most commonly used ACT strategies: guessing. If this cat can learn how to guess, so can you! Guessing isn’t an exact science, and because it relies a lot on ‘gut feelings,’ it is impossible to write one article that will fit everyone’s needs. Yet there are a few things everyone can do to make sure that every guess on the ACT is a good guess. When do I guess? In short, it’s when you don’t know the answer. Yet this is only one piece of the puzzle. You have to remember that when you take the ACT, a lot is going on at once. The clock ticks down to zero, and your stress level is high. Your mind, unfortunately, is not in the best position to determine what it really does and does not know. Fortunately, there are a few ways to give your brain a break. The first has to do with time. On each test on the ACT, you have a specific number of seconds allotted to each question. For your convenience, here they are in all of their stress-inducing glory: English: 36 seconds per question. Math: 60 seconds per question. Reading: 52.5 seconds per question. Science: 52.5 seconds per question. I’m not asking you to be precise with your time keeping, but for example, if it feels like you’ve spent a minute tackling a Math question without success, it’s time to guess. By this point you’ve probably eliminated 1 or 2 of the answer choices. With your remaining choice, don’t linger on the decision. There are other questions waiting. Also, be sure to check out How to Eliminate SAT Math Answer Choices. Though its subject is the SAT, the article contains some excellent advice applicable to the ACT Math Test. If you feel that you will have time to go back to your guessed questions, mark the question on your test booklet for easy reference. Never put any stray marks on your answer sheet. I’m running out of time! Ah yes, if ACT Time Management isn’t your strength, it’s possible that you could be down to the wire and still have a handful of blank questions on your answer sheet. If you only have a minute (or less) left, it’s time to bubble in the blanks. For no other reason than it saves time, bubble in the same answer for each question. It doesn’t matter which one, just make sure every question has an answer. Though furiously filling in bubbles may seem like an act of desperation, because the ACT doesn’t penalize guessing, you’re actually improving your score by accidentally providing one or two correct answers. Don’t pat yourself on the back yet, though. If time management is an issue on every part of the ACT, you’re going to need to retest after you’ve cured (or at least treated) your time management problems. The verbs imply and infer are easily confused because their meanings are closely associated. Put simply, a writer or speaker implies (or suggests) something; a reader or listener infers (or deduces). Imply means to indicate without stating or to express indirectly. Infer means to draw a conclusion. Thus, what a writer may imply, a reader may infer. How to Use Imply To imply is to express something indirectly. If youre implying something in a conversation, you may be trying to talk about a difficult issue very delicately. Youre circumventing it, hoping that your audience will pick up on your meaning without your having to give a lot of uncomfortable details or explicit descriptions. Maybe youre in a group and want to say something so that only one person in the group truly understands it, so you send a veiled message. Or you could be saying one thing with words, but your actions or facial expressions could be telling a different story, implying the truth or your real feelings on the subject. You imply when you imbue your words with extra meaning thats not explicitly said. It doesnt just have to be in conversation. It can be crafted in writing as well through figurative language and carefully chosen phrasing, just as in spoken conversation. How to Use Infer When you infer, you do just the opposite of implying. You pick up on the message hidden between the lines, so to speak. You deduce a subtle meaning from the metaphor, allegory, or symbolism in a story you are reading. Or you read the body language cues a person is giving you to come to a conclusion. For example, a glance at a clock and a raised eyebrow from your spouse during a family gathering might mean, Can we leave this party now? Im bored. You make an educated guess based on the available data. Examples Here are a few examples that show the differences in meanings behind the two words: The manager implied that I was a bad risk.I inferred from her remarks that she thought I was lazy.Im sorry that what I said implied a negative opinion about her artwork.
